QDOS, Art, Lively and multi-grid avatars!
According to QDOS I’m as ‘famous’ (on the internet) as Ester Williams and Andrew Dice Clay haha!! oooh better than that (if it’s possible to be more famous than ester williams), I’m between David Hockney and Damien Hirst on the QDOS artists list!
Now to my art! here’s the sketch i just uploaded! I’ll finish this one in photoshop soon, right now it’s scanned directly from the pencil and ink pen sketch. I want to make this be as small as possible without losing detail, i haven’t experimented with scale on it yet!
Here’s a comment I made (on RezEd) about Googles new 3D avatar chat Lively and the implications of a multi-grid avatar (one that can go from ay SecondLife to Lively).
To "design your own room" in Lively (as it is right now) is similar to designing a room with your Lego blocks, the blocks are already made, and the things to put inside the rooms are already made. Basically, Lively is a chat room/doll house with a few built in noises.
For a person who has experienced the building and texture possibilities in SecondLife, I can say that I’d rather use an instant messenger to chat than be in Lively with nothing to do except walk around.
I don’t think the idea of a 3D world is becoming ‘more’ mainstream, as most everyone with a computer will have seen a 3D video game by now if only pictures of one. But is 3D ‘better’ for simply chatting?
The idea of multi-grid avatar travel is interesting but do the math, the minute you leave SL, whatever little bit of privacy you have is gone also. Sure LL are not saints but so far no one has had their real life identity extracted from their avatar without their permission, but as we have seen lately with Verizon and Youtube, the precedent has been set by big business – privacy is not a ‘right’ it’s like a virginity waiting to be taken.
Being semi-anonymous in SecondLife (for example) allows people to learn by ‘walking in another person’s shoes’ and shows first hand in a way text books can’t how people judge others based on their perception of how you look.
The first time you ‘gender-bend’ your avatar and experience the way you are treated as a member of the opposite sex is a learning experience that one can do in the privacy of your home but do you want verizon or your fundamentalist boss to know?
I think that people will be less likely to learn about themselves or unconsciously start to show a ‘interview face’ with a multi-grid avatar.
